Thanksgiving Turkey Pre-Order

In the past month we have been busy building the new coops for the turkeys and getting them out to the pasture from the brooder. Growing turkeys is not only the Super Bowl for the growing season, but also the capstone of life and activity at the farm as turkeys are such a joy to raise. The toms start strutting at about two weeks of age and start gobbling a few weeks after that. At that point, their sounds and conversations carry across the farm. Having raised thousands of Thanksgiving turkeys over the course of 18 years in regenerative agriculture, we find it a tremendous honor to have such a role in family holiday festivities.

Through the duration of their 17 weeks on the farm, these turkeys are fed and incredible diet of non-GMO, organically grown feed that we mix ourselves in order to control the ration and make sure the highest quality feed is in front of them. Alongside that feed, we start providing whole wheat kernels as a supplement. By the end of their time on the farm, about 50% of their diet is the wheat kernels, which gives their flavor a nutty and buttery profile. We let them choose how much of that they want by monitoring their consumption rates as they move around the fields on the farm.

This year at Tierra Verde, we will also be raising turkeys across different pastures in order to allow their fertility to have effect on the grass that we will graze next summer. The last shot of high-quality fertilizer from our turkeys is a great boost to the feed we provide for our cattle and sheep during the next season.

Of all our products, customers say it’s our turkeys that stand apart most clearly from anything you’ll find in a store. We have had many customers say that prior to eating our turkeys, they never wanted the white meat, or they only ate turkey one day a year. Now, many people keep coming back through the year for the great flavor and health benefits. We're raising significantly more birds this year in hopes that we can deliver great turkey beyond the Thanksgiving season.

Thanks for considering one of our turkeys for your holiday centerpiece. It’s an honor to provide such healthy and high-quality as well as desirable means for you and your families!

Pre-order your 2025 Thanksgiving turket today!

Your part is easy....

  1.  Go to Thanksgiving pre-order under "shop now" on the website

    2. Pick the size turkey you would like

    FAQ:

    1. When do I pick it up?

We have 2 pickup days depending on your pickup site:

The Saturday before Thanksgiving (November 22) from 9 AM to Noon:

    • Here at Tierra Verde Farm
    • Cuyahoga Valley Farmers Market
    • The Dutch Cupboard
    • Kent (Belltower Brewing)

The day before Thanksgiving from 4 PM to 7 PM:

    • North Canton drop site

    2. Where do I pick it up?

The confirmation email will say your pick-up site is "your standard pickup location".

If you have a standard pickup location and you want to pick your turkey up there, you need to do nothing.

If you have never ordered with us before, you will have to select a pickup location. Select the one that you want to use for your turkey pickup.

If you have a standard pickup location but want to use a different location for your turkey, proceed with the standard location, and information will come closer to the distribution date about how to change that.

    3. When do I pay?

    You will pay at pick-up.

    4. Can I buy a turkey if I don't pre-order?

If we have turkeys left after all of the pre-orders are fulfilled, we will offer them for sale at our pickup locations. But we don't recommend risking Thanksgiving dinner by waiting!

    5. Am I guaranteed the size that I want?

Nature doesn't grow turkeys to exact sizes, so we're offering three size options to make sure that we you a bird that works best for your table.

    6. What if I don't read any of this, or what if I read it all and forget what it said?

Save this post! And as always call us with any questions.

    A Primer about Hay

Over the past few weeks I have discussed the difficulty in getting our first cut hay in the barn and we have had a bunch of questions about hay... What are the differences of first cut and second cut hay? Why do you wrap some hay in plastic and others not? What is wet hay? So I wanted to take a minute and answer all the questions in one post.

It is all about the dirt

In my weekly newsletter I discussed the fact that I just finished some fall fertilization and a number of folks wrote and asked pasture, lawn, or garden fertility management questions. So instead of answering them all individually I have chosen to write a series of short post that describe some of the issues associated with managing soil fertility to maximize production and in our case animal health. This is the first in the soil series. I will introduce some of the variables, players and first steps associated with managing soil fertility.

    Lamb vs Veal

I was asked by a customer: Is lamb raised like veal? The point they were concerned with is the in-humane nature that some veal is raised. Today I will try to address the similarities and differences between lamb and veal.
